Spruce (Picea) - a genus of the pine family (Pinaceae). Only common or European spruce (P.abies syn. P.excelsa) grows wild in Latvia. It is an evergreen size 1 monoecious conifer with a straight trunk and extensive, shallow root system. Crown pyramidal. Branches in spikes. The bark on young trees is smooth, later it becomes scaly. The needles are four-sided (flat in shading), 1.2-2.5 cm long, shiny, dark green, 1 attached to the branch with a stalk, which remains on the branch when the needle falls off. The needles remain on the tree for 5-7 years. Stamens are collected in yellow microstrobils in the upper needles of the previous year's shoots. Seed pods in dark purple to pale green macrostrobils, which develop 1 at a time at the tip of the previous year's shoots. Blooms W. Pollinated by wind. A lot of pollen, they each have 2 air sacs, and the wind carries them kilometers away. Macrostrobils develop into elongated, ovoid, drooping cones that ripen in autumn. Each cotyledon (cone scale) has 2 winged seeds (the wing is large, the seed is included in the form of a spoon), which fall out in IV-V of the following year. Spread by the wind. The cones fall whole, often a year or even later after the seeds are shed.

In Latvia, common spruce is often found throughout the territory. Grows well in slightly acidic podzol loamy soil, the top layer of which has accumulated acidic rot. Grows in pure stands and mixed stands with all other Latvian forest tree species. Often forms the second floor. It occupies 19% of the total area of Latvian forests. Reaches a height of >40m and a girth of 3.8m. Life span up to 300 years.

The biggest fir trees in Latvia are the Īves fir tree in the Talsu region. and Upmaļi dižegle Jēkabpils district. Common spruce is shade-tolerant (it can grow in the shade for several decades), but it is resistant to wind; suffers from flue gases and can freeze in late spring frosts. Propagated by seeds. The wood is flexible, it is used for pulp industry, construction, furniture industry, firewood. The so-called snake fir is special, with very dense branching, but few second-order branches or yellowish needles. Common fir is also grown in plantings of 1, in groups or in hedge plantings. It is damaged by many insects and their larvae, gk. beetles (spruce eight-toothed bark beetle) and butterflies (spruce nun, spruce cone borer). Root rot caused by root rot also does a lot of damage.

Normal spruce cultures are established only with seedlings, which are grown by retraining vieng. grown in a greenhouse or divg. seedlings grown in field conditions. Spruce seeds germinate more slowly than pine seeds, so it is desirable to stimulate their germination. Spruce seeds should be embedded no deeper than 1-1.5 cm. Dry seeds germinate fairly evenly - 1 month. during, but in unfavorable weather conditions, germination may take up to 45 days.
